"Eye to the Future"

Eye to the Future

by Robert Reardon, Columnist
("Eye to the Future" is a column published in each issue of The Humanitarian, the newsletter for Humanitarian Society members.)

Each year for as long as I can recall my employer, IBM, had an annual charitable campaign for the United Way. For the longest time I enthusiastically participated in this campaign with my contribution. One year, however, they adopted the theme of "This Year - Now More Than Ever." That was OK with me until they started continuing that theme so that every year became "Now More Than Ever." I began to think that I was dumping my contribution into a losing situation. What I wanted to hear was that, due to my contribution and the contributions of thousands of others, this year the need is even less than last year and getting better every year. Perhaps the end was even in sight. I think that all of us who contribute to a charity would like to think that we are contributing to an improving, not a declining, situation. With this in mind, I would like to commend the Humanitarian Society for focusing on tangible contributions and activities which provide obvious joy to the life ot the recipients. Anyone attending the annual Fourth of July picnic will know exactly what I am saying.
